What are the Common Causes of Snoring?

Although snoring is not something pleasing to talk about, it’s quite a common problem.
To suit the case with the remedy, let’s find out the causes of snoring first.

Snoring cause

Don’t be scared by this seemingly complicated picture! The principle is quite straightforward.
As you can see, we breath normally when the air moves freely and smoothly from the nose to the throat. Snoring happens when this air passage narrows during sleep.

Then what are the real culprits behind the narrowing of airways in most cases?

Inappropriate sleeping posture
For some, snoring is simply caused by improper sleeping position. It’s proven that sleeping on the back is more likely to result in snoring since throat and neck tissues relax more than they normally would, which brings about blockage in the airway.

Nasal congestion
Nasal congestion resulting from colds, allergies, sinus infection and other nasal issues could also make the airway obstructive thus resulting in snoring.

Being overweight
Snoring in fact has something to do with obesity. You may find that your partner sleeps quietly when you marry him but begins to snore as he gets fat in his middle age. Increase in fatty tissues around the throat narrows the airway and obstructs normal breathing.

Excessive drinking and smoking
Alcohol and tobacco contain substances that relax your throat muscles, making the airway narrow and finally results in hoarse snoring patters.

How to alleviate snoring without surgery and medication?
  • Try changing sleeping position
If the snorer is a back sleeper, the problem could be solved simply by changing to side sleeping. However, how to keep this position as you toss and turn during the whole night sleep is another problem incurred.

Try a body pillow with arms and knees hugging around it is a good way to maintain this posture. The old remedy of tying a tennis ball to the back also helps!

  • Essential Oil Therapy
If snoring is largely resulted from nasal congestion problems, using essential oils is proven to be an effective and less intrusive way to cure snoring.
